Video Capture Your Entire Screen: CaptureFox

Many times bloggers feel the need of creating video tutorial to best express what they want to communicate to people. There are a bunch of free and paid applications that help you do that, also web-based actually such as ScreenToaster (which I really recommend to anyone as you can use it on any operating system or browser, and which I will cover soon in an article), but a Firefox’s user dream would be an add-on that lets you record your screen.

It is called Capture Fox, a handy tool to create tutorials about a software, a web site or anything that can be displayed on your computer, and not only in your browser as you would think! It records your screen frame by frame, as well as your voice, to AVI files.

After it has been installed, it shows itself only with a small button on the bottom right of the screen: after a click, a settings menu opens, made of two tabs:

  • Basic Settings

    cfox_settings

Here you can set whether you want to capture the whole screen or just the Firefox windows, choose the video quality, how many frames per second should be captured (1,2,3,4, or 5…Which is a little low I guess!), decide if you want yo record you voice from you microphone and finally set the output destination folder.

  • Advanced Settings

    cfox_advsettings

In this section you can modify the codec that’ll be used for capturing. Now available (current version is 0.3.5.081007b) you have JPEG and XVID for video, and WAV or MP3 for audio. Plus, you can give a name to the output AVI file.

There’s nothing more to say! I just hope that developers will make this software better because it is a great idea which can become the main program people use to record their screen.

I already use since last November. The problem is with SO: if you use Windows 7 or quite WS Vista, the problems could appear. Not necessary, they are completely aleatory: for example for the same 25 computes in a lab, the problems occur only for a few…
Another problem is recently about mouse cursor: sometimes is not visible…

    Hi,
We’ve released the new version, v0.7. The cursor problem has been fixed as well as other minor issues. Also, some nice features have been added.

    Thanks for the post,

    Zafer
